Intern Reflects on Time at Bright Side Manor

Editor’s Note: Ourania R. is a computer science major at Fairleigh Dickinson University who performed 60 hours of community service over the course of 3 weeks this spring at Bright Side Manor, supervised by Social Worker Michelle Madonna. As a tech wiz, Ourania was initially tasked with helping our residents troubleshoot problems they were having with their phones and computers, but she also enjoyed conversing with residents about her dreams and aspirations, with one resident even helping her develop a ‘business plan” for the future. Ourania was also a talented caricature artist and sat with many of our residents for hours getting to know then and capturing their likenesses. “I’ve had such an incredible time volunteering at Bright Side Manor. As a student part of my school’s psychology program, I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering and facilitating activities such as Pictionary, Hang Man, and Beach Ball, as well as helping residents with everyday needs. Every visit felt purposeful and full of heart.One of my favorite memories was the caricature activity. Watching the residents light up when they saw their portraits, laughing and sharing them with each other, pointing out the funny details, was truly priceless. It reminded me how much joy a simple, creative moment can bring. Beyond the activities, it was the conversations that stayed with me most. Getting to sit with residents, listening to their wisdom, and be truly present with them felt like a privilege. The staff were equally wonderful—welcoming, dedicated, and clearly passionate about the people in their care.I’m so grateful for the opportunity to contribute, even in small ways, to such a warm and loving community. Bright Side Manor lives up to its name in every sense.”
