Community Begins at Home Initiative Strengthens Inclusive Living in Teaneck

The Bright Side Family is proud to lead Community Begins at Home, a state-funded initiative designed to help make Teaneck a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive community for people of all ages and abilities.

What is Community Begins at Home?

An extension of the organization's long-standing Age-Friendly Teaneck initiative, Community Begins at Home brings together municipal leaders, nonprofit organizations, businesses, civic groups, faith communities, and residents to identify and address barriers that can prevent older adults and individuals with disabilities from fully participating in community life.

With many years of experience serving older adults in Teaneck, The Bright Side Family is leading this collaborative effort in partnership with the Township of Teaneck and Heightened Independence and Progress (hipcil). The initiative is funded through an Inclusive Healthy Communities Grant from the Division of Disability Services, New Jersey Department of Human Services.

"More than half of Teaneck residents living with a disability are over the age of 65," said Elizabeth Davis, Executive Director of The Bright Side Family. "As our community continues to age, it's important that we work together to remove barriers, encourage inclusion, and ensure that every resident has the opportunity to remain active, engaged, and connected."

Community Begins at Home focuses on bringing community partners together to identify local needs, gather input from residents with lived experience, and develop practical solutions that promote accessibility, independence, and social connection. Through collaboration with local government, community organizations, and volunteers, the initiative seeks to strengthen support networks while fostering long-term policy and community improvements.

"Teaneck was one of the first municipalities in New Jersey to join the global Age-Friendly Communities movement," said Township Manager Dean Kazinci. "The goals of this project reflect the values of our community and our continued commitment to creating a welcoming environment for residents of all ages and abilities."

The initiative also aims to serve as a model that can be replicated in other communities across New Jersey.

"What many communities need is a coordinated effort that brings together local government, nonprofits, volunteers, and residents to identify challenges and develop meaningful solutions," said Brian Fitzgibbons, President and CEO of Heightened Independence and Progress (hipcil). "We are proud to partner in this important work."

Community Begins at Home will continue to engage a diverse network of service providers, civic organizations, faith-based groups, and volunteers to help expand awareness, strengthen community connections, and support residents throughout Teaneck.

By building on the success of Age-Friendly Teaneck and other Bright Side Family programs, Community Begins at Home reflects a shared commitment to creating a community where everyone can thrive with dignity, independence, and opportunity.
