A free money management program for older adults in Bergen County

Guidance & assurance.

Senior Checks is a program that aims to strengthen older adults' ability to remain independent by offering assistance with day-to-day financial management needs, including paying bills, budgeting, keeping up with mail, and more.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 percent of Bergen County residents over the age of 65 have a disability of some type. This means that an estimated 6,000 have vision difficulty, which can make simple tasks like writing checks a significant challenge.

We're here to help.

"My hands are shaky and writing out checks has become difficult."

"I have piles of unopened mail since my stay at the hospital and feel overwhelmed"

"My partner passed away and I have never paid a bill  on my own before."

"Sometimes I have a hard time reading the fine print and I need some help."

Participants must be Bergen County residents, age 60 or older, who cannot afford commercial bill paying services.

How it works.

Trained and vetted volunteers are paired with program participants, who work one-on-one with clients as their Bill Paying Assistant (BPA). Volunteers are required to dedicate at least two hours per month for at least one year in order to build trust, maintain consistency, and ensure reliability.
